The Alamana Reserve........... ‘An Island of Eden’

The Alamana Reserve is our exclusive concession area sharing borders with the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Spanning open grasslands, kopjes, ridges, acacia woodland and water holes dotted along the Alamana River, The Alamana Reserve boasts a diverse number of habitats, wonderful game viewing and a totally exclusive and private safari experience.

The Alamana Reserve is undoubtedly one of the few sanctuaries left in northern Tanzania where our guests can discover the true essence of safari-exclusivity, remoteness and a true reflection on just how good the wilderness can be. Because

The Alamana Reserve is an exclusive use area under our own management, we have complete freedom to Game Drive by day and by night and also to outfit Game Walks and overnight Non-Traditional Fly Camps across over 300 square kilometers of true wilderness.

The Alamana Reserve has an all round game presence, however the green season months from November until June see the vast migratory herds of Zebra and Wildebeest filing through in search of good grazing lands.

The beauty of The Alamana Reserve lies in its diversity and exclusivity, rolling plains studded with rock kopjes, high ridges and acacia lined rivers with not another living soul around, creates a timeless experience.

The main predator within the reserve is the Cheetah and together with the Serengeti Cheetah project we are working to record the Cheetah population within The Alamana Reserve. Our guests are all encouraged to help with Cheetah identification with response forms supplied in camp. In addition to the Cheetahs of The Alamana Reserve there is a healthy number of larger cats including Lion and Leopard as well as the smaller varieties of Serval and African Wildcats.

Like Osunyai, The Alamana Wilderness Camp (our only camp within this pristine reserve), has the Wildlife Explorer wilderness camp treatment and is hosted by one of our Specialist Walking Guides. Each guide has been selected and trained to unravel the mysteries of the eco-systems smaller wildlife portraits, whether it is on foot or around the campfire.

The sleeping accommodations are in classic safari tents set against 3 different Kopjes, all with uninterrupted views out onto the plains or kopjes of The Alamana, where herds of plains game can be seen meandering too and fro. Alamana lounge

The tents are large and airy with full width windows and en-suite bathrooms, King sized double or two extra long single beds, hanging wardrobe, luggage racks and interior light tables. Exquisite scatter cushions and African textiles complete the furnishings.

A separate dining and lounge pavilion is set under the shade of a towering kopje looking west towards the setting sun, providing an elegant place to relax at the end of yet another glorious African day!

The Wildlife Explorer experience includes the use of specially converted Open Vehicles at all of our Wilderness Camps in addition to the 4wd Safari Vehicles that are used for the rest of the safari, providing complete open-air game driving. Windscreens lie flat and the sunshade may be removed allowing 360 degree uninterrupted game-viewing.

Night Drives using either the open vehicles or the safari land cruisers open up a completely different facet of safari, painting nocturnal pictures with hand held spotlights, the night-time animals are suddenly part of the game viewing experience.

As an added bonus to excitement at The Alamana Reserve, there is also an opportunity to shrug off the luxury of the larger camp and head out for an evening under the stars in Wildlife Explorer’s Non Traditional Fly Camp.

Wildlife Explorer has two full time Walking Guides that are stationed at our wilderness camps. These guides are qualified in all aspects of true game walking with their knowledge of wild animal behavior, tracking and experience with firearms they are able to treat our guests to an unforgettable safari on foot.

Please note that a ‘Game Walk’ is not to be confused with a ‘Hike’. A ‘Game Walk’ is exactly what it says - an opportunity to look for wild game on foot in the company of an experienced walking guide who will endeavor to track any animal of interest that may be encountered during the walk.

The Masai who inhabit the area provide a fascinating glimpse into an ancient culture. Living on the outer boundaries of this vast wilderness when the migratory herds of Wildebeest and Zebra arrive onto the short grass plains, the Masai of The Alamana Reserve live an unspoilt, traditional existence, allowing our guests a wonderful opportunity to combine wildlife experiences with authentic cultural interaction. Like Osunyai, The Alamana Reserve is a community conservation project that involves & benefits the local community by the generation of revenue and the preservation of essential grazing lands. Every decision made in The Alamana supports our belief in sustainable, community supported tourism with each decision based on improving our eco-friendly model for operations within the area.

Alamana Reserve, and Osunyai represent an exclusive opportunity to combine Luxury Tented Accommodation with True Adventure! Each area is exclusive to Wildlife Explorer.
