Rwanda - Land of a Thousand Hills

Discover a new African Dawn. A bright new light rising over the land of a thousand hills.

From vast lakes to savannah plains and limitless hills and valleys in between. Rwanda boasts a stunning diversity of natural attractions as well as a rich culture.

Sharing time with a Mountain Gorilla is an extraordinary experience. It is fitting that Rwanda is one of only two countries where Gorilla Tracking is currently possible.

Rwanda is beyond your imagination but not beyond your reach.

Since the early eighties, Rwanda has featured in Wildlife Explorer’s history and it is with not just a little excitement that in June 2003 we re-established our links with this beautiful country to recommence safaris in the mountains and lakes of what is rightly referred to as little Switzerland.

Rwanda boasts the longest habituation project for the endangered Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla, Gorilla Beringei) with 5 separate gorilla groups habituated to date and a healthy indication that conservation efforts are paying off in terms of protection for these gentle giants.

In addition to tracking for Mountain Gorillas there are a number of additional activities that can be incorporated into a safari such as activities on Lake Kivu, Mountain Biking and cultural exploration at the museum in Butare.

Uganda

The scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate is different and most of all the people are different from anything elsewhere…in the whole of Africa
Sir Winston Churchill.

Uganda is re-developing back into the Pearl it always used to be.

Uganda is a country whose beauty almost denies description-to the west rolling highlands covered in tea plantations green to an almost emerald translucence, to the east vast wilderness tracts covered in great herds of wild animals and in the central regions huge lakes and river systems provide wonderful habitat for the returning game.

Safari in Uganda can include white water river rafting, lake journeys bird watching and of course traditional game viewing using our four wheel drive vehicles but almost all safaris include some time at The Impenetrable Forest.

The very name conjures visions of Tarzan like vines and secretive forest animal’s shadow like in the dense vegetation. To be frank this would be quite an honest description of trekking in The Impenetrable Forest however under the keen eyes of the Ugandan Wildlife Service Gorilla Safaris are now not only on a par with neighbouring Rwanda’s long standing habituation projects but to many The Impenetrable Forest provides the purest Gorilla Trekking available.

Kenya

There is no proverbial pot of gold at the end of Kenya's many rainbows, but wherever it falls, and wherever you go, there is a golden land rich in the wealth of its contrasts, its landscapes, its cultures and the welcome it extends to all its guests and visitors.
The peoples of the region - equally variable; nomads, pastoralists, hunter-gatherers; a fascinating cultural range, spiced with the historic influence of Chinese, Arabian, Portuguese, English traders, explorers and settlers.

One of Kenya's major private conservation successes at the foot of Mt Kenya, Lewa Downs has been the Craig family home since 1924 when the Craig grandparents came from England and began raising cattle there.

Perhaps this is where the magic of old still exists, away from the mass tourism development seen in Kenya since independence? Where individuality is still an important criteria for operating unique properties and game concessions such as Lew Downs, Shampole, Tana Delta Camp to name but a few.

Kenya still remains as exclusive as history rightly labels it as long as one knows where to look! We are extremely privileged to be able to include Kenya’s premium wildlife destinations in our portfolio.

Botswana

Botswana has set aside more than seventeen percent of the country for game-parks and reserves. The Okavango River flows down from Angola to form an immense inland delta of lagoons, palm-fringed islands and fertile flood plains. The Okavango Delta is Botswana's major destination. Other great game reserves like Chobe, Linyanti and Moremi also offer magnificent game viewing and bird watching opportunities. Still other destinations - the Kalahari Desert and Makadikadi Pans - are more remote and offer an unparalleled journey into the desert and all it has to offer.

Some of Southern Africa’s most stylish and creative lodges and camps are to be found nestling in remote and exclusive game rich areas throughout the Botswana countryside. Camps that can be as romantic in flavour as the finest honeymoon or as rustic in style as a good Single Malt!

Over the years we have found Botswana to be as exciting for our first time guests as it undoubtedly is for Wildlife Explorer’s returning friends and have selected a small number of camps and outfitters that reflect our same high standard of service to work with in Botswana.

Lying awake on the Makadikadi salt pans with a fish-eye view of the milky way, elephant tummy serenades on the delta, or plans for the next makoro exploration, Botswana is a feast for anyone!

In 2010 we are guiding two Private Safaris to Botswana and Zambia, exploring the Okavango Delta, Kalahari Desert and ‘Mosi O Tunya’ (Victoria Falls).

Madagascar

In a cataclysmic earthquake, Madagascar broke free from Africa about 165 million years ago. She spent the next 45 million years drifting approximately 250 miles to the northeast – her present position.

Madagascar is home to nine-tenths of all the world's lemur species, including the dwarf Microcebus, no bigger than a mouse; the very friendly Macaco; the Catta, with a distinctive gray body and long black-and-white striped tail; the Sifaka, which can leap 30 feet or more from branch to branch; the Indri, tallest of all lemurs; and the rarest of all lemurs, the Aye-aye.

Madagascar is considered a must-see by all serious birdwatchers. Visitors to the island are often amazed by the wide variety of rare and breathtakingly beautiful birds, including the marvelous Vangas, the beautiful Crested Coua, the remarkably colorful Roller bird, over 70 different species of singing birds and parrots, an abundance of gorgeous waterfowl, including herons and flamingos; and graceful birds of prey, such as the lightning-fast eagle and graceful falcon.

Sheltering more than 10,000 varieties of plants (with more discovered daily), Madagascar is truly blanketed with one of the richest collections of flora in the world, including: 1,000 different species of orchids, including the stunning black orchid and the rarest of all orchids--the white-flowered
