NewsHaving just returned from yet another amazing adventure in Rwanda I am almost tempted to include this 4 night extension on every safari itinerary!... |
Adventure Safaris255 UnchartedEver wanted to walk with the Great Migration? Bungie jump over Victoria Falls? Ride Motorbikes across the Masai Steppe? Or include remote, exclusive camps as part of your safari? 255 Uncharted is the fringe element of Wildlife Explorer - the start of an alternative experience for our guests that wish to visit Africa in a stylish but different way. E.Mail us now for the next great adventure. Horse Back SafarisGame viewing on horseback is an awesome experience, whether it is a simple viewing of a Masai Giraffe shaded under an acacia tree or a herd of Elephant as they browse at sundown, the poetry of horse riding in game rich areas is unique. The peace and tranquillity of a traditional safari on horseback almost defies description with no noise pollution and the ability to get close to plains game creates an experience that is so far removed from regular game-viewing. During the green season between December and March our own private concession, The Alamana, has a small stable of horses to hack with across the open plains and ridges overlooking the Serengeti National Park. Guided by Janice Beatty, an excellent lifelong horsewoman, small groups can experience the true freedom of an African Horseback Safari either early morning, late afternoon or for an overnight away from the main camp in one of our non-traditional fly camps. Some riding experience is essential with particular note to the English tack that we prefer to ride with. It is essential that anyone wishing to explore with us on horseback is able to ride “leg on” and is comfortable with this type of riding. The Safari on Horseback combined with our own Wilderness Camp plus Game Walking and Night Game Drives in Tanzania is a Wildlife Explorer exclusive. Botswana , Kenya and South Africa also have Horseback Safaris that can be combined with any of our traditional safaris. Mount KilimanjaroTHE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO soar like an apparition over East Africa's shimmering plains, and in Hemingway's words, they're "as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun." We know the ultimate way to get to these legendary snows: a spectacular 9-day hike via the Shira Plateau Route. The Shira route is an incredibly scenic trail on the remote southwest flank of the mountain that provides maximum altitude acclimatization and keeps us far from the over-trodden "tourist route" up the mountain. We reach the summit on the eighth day of hiking and celebrate atop Kilimanjaro's gleaming glacier dome at 19,340 feet, the highest point in Africa. The sight of Tanzania’s tallest mountain and in fact the largest free standing mountain in the world can leave one breathless. I will never forget my first sight of a rising sun silhouetting Mawenzi - Kilimanjaro’s second peak as it rose from the distant horizon and as I sat on top of the roof of Africa! After a celebratory descent our guests either head off on safari combining the Serengeti with Kilimanjaro or hit the beach for a well earned bout of relaxation diving, snorkeling or reveling in the historic isles of east Africa. Please contact us for more information on Adventure Safaris with Wildlife Explorer Mount MeruUnlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is relatively unknown, however for those of us that live and breath in the shadows of these two mountains Mount Meru is every bit as spectacular and for those people fortunate enough to have the time Mount Meru is an unforgettable climb. The main cone of the volcano has a caldera which is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) in diameter. It has a huge breach on its eastern side. A graben runs down the side of the volcano from this breach. Many debris flows came through the breach in the caldera. These cover 1500 sq km to the northeast, east and southeast. Following the eruption of this debris, a lava dome and ash cone grew on the floor of the caldera. Meru is a stratovolcano. Its history has been quite explosive. It has had four eruptions, the last of which occurred in 1910. Lava erupted from Meru varies from thin flows to thick intusive domes. Climbing Meru is not only a great climb it’s also a fascinating view on the fauna and flora of Arusha national park where the mountain forms a valuable frontier for the protection of the many game animals seen when hiking the trails of Meru. With Kilimanjaro forming a magnificent backdrop can there be a more dramatic mountain to conquer? |
