Mount Kilimanjaro
THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO soar like an apparition over East Africa's shimmering plains, and in Hemingway's
words, they're "as
wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun."
We know the ultimate way to get to these legendary snows: a spectacular 9-day hike via the Shira Plateau Route. The Shira route is an incredibly scenic trail on the remote southwest flank of the mountain that provides maximum altitude acclimatization and keeps us far from the over-trodden "tourist route" up the mountain. We reach the summit on the eighth day of hiking and celebrate atop Kilimanjaro's gleaming glacier dome at 19,340 feet, the highest point in Africa.
The sight of Tanzania’s tallest mountain and in fact the largest free standing mountain in the world can leave one breathless. I will never forget my first sight of a rising sun silhouetting Mawenzi - Kilimanjaro’s second peak as it rose from the distant horizon and as I sat on top of the roof of Africa!
After a celebratory descent our guests either head off on safari combining the Serengeti with Kilimanjaro or hit the beach for a well earned bout of relaxation diving, snorkeling or reveling in the historic isles of east Africa.
